Training A Shar Pei

Shar-Pei are alert, intelligent and devoted to their family, so they are naturally good guard dogs even without any training.

Leashes and Collars

I do not recommend keeping a collar on the puppy at home. Puppies have been known to hang themselves on their own collars. Only use them when you are taking them out of the home.

When training a puppy to walk on a leash, I do not recommend a harness because the dog learns to pull.

A choke collar is much safer for Shar-Pei than a buckled collar. Due to the soft loose skin, it is difficult to buckle a collar tight enough to secure it.

Discipline at Home

Correct a puppy with a squirt bottle with water. No hitting. Correction must be immediate for the puppy to connect the behavior with the punishment. Stubborn puppies may need a teaspoon of white vinegar added to the water. It will not harm the puppy but they may pay more attention to it.

Training Classes

Most puppies need to be about 6 months of age before they begin attending obedience training classes. The best method is for the owner and puppy to train together. Sending a dog off to training is not recommended, both because owners don't know what methods are used and because the dog needs to be trained to obey the family members.

"Photo by Bruce G. Holcomb. Our family was searching for a pet quality Shar-Pei and found our perfect little guy at Baggins Kennels! Aesthetically he was beautiful, his blue-green eyes gorgeous, his apricot coat soft with lots of wrinkles…but most impressive to us was his temperament. Such a loving, sweet puppy, very smart and bonded immediately to our family. He became housebroken quickly learning how to ring his bell to go outside by 9 weeks. His eagerness and ability to learn commands is amazing and understands 6 hand signals at 3 months old. He’s full of love and is the love of our lives! We couldn’t be happier with Baggins Kennels that they offer such high quality Shar-Peis. They seem to breed for temperament, health and intelligence whether you’re looking for show or pet quality. It’s tempting to add another to our family!"
